Nazareth falls to RIT in Wendy's consolation, 74-68

CHILI, N.Y. – Sixth-seeded Nazareth lost its second straight women's basketball game as part of the annual Wendy's College Classic Thursday as seventh-seeded RIT pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 74-68 victory over the Golden Flyers in a consolation game played at Roberts Wesleyan.

Nazareth also lost to the University of Rochester Tuesday and now stands at 4-2 overall. RIT improved to 4-1.  The Golden Flyers play again Saturday at 1 p.m. at Geneseo against William Smith.

Lindsey Kelly led Nazareth with 17 points. Sam Sorge scored 15 and Julia Brew added 14. RIT had five players in doubles figures, led by Jessica Glaz, who scored 16.

Nazareth never led in the first half, but rallied to take a 53-52 lead into the fourth quarter after outscoring the Tigers 19-14 in the third. Nazareth took the lead for the first time, 43-42, when Sorge nailed a three-pointer with 5:41 left. After RIT regained the lead, Peck hit a three with 1:24 to go to put Nazareth ahead 53-50. Cori Okada scored the final basket of the quarter for RIT to touch off a 12-2 scoring run that spilled into the fourth quarter and gave the Tigers the lead for good.

Nazareth was still within five, 69-64, following two free throws by Kelly with 1:03 to go, but RIT sank free throws down the stretch -- four by Okada and one by Glaz -- to seal the victory.
 
Nazareth never led in the first half, but tied the score at 29-29 midway through the second quarter when Brew hit one of her two three-pointers. RIT, however, scored the next five points to regain the lead and eventually settled for a 38-34 lead at the break. Brew scored 10 of her points in the first half and Fanny Kilpinen scored all nine of her points, including a three-pointer.

Nazareth made 24 of 59 shots for the game (40.7 percent), including 8 of 29 from three-point range. The Golden Flyers went 12 for 13 from the free throw line. RIT, which made 24 of 62 shots from the floor, benefitted from a 48-28 rebounding advantage, including 17 offensive boards.
