Tournament SiteGENESEO, N.Y. – The sixth-seeded Nazareth College women's basketball team had a strong close to the second half, earning a 79-68 victory over eighth-seeded William Smith College in the seventh place game of the Wendy's College Classic Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Nazareth improves to 5-2 on the year, while William Smith falls to 1-6.
Holding a 63-61 lead with under four minutes to play, Nazareth used a 7-0 run to open up the game.
Lindsey Kelly started the run with a layup and
Veronica Peck added the other five points on a 3-pointer, followed by two free throws.
Nazareth went 11-for-12 from the free throw line over the final two minutes to seal the victory.
Sam Sorge registered seven points in the first quarter, including a 3-pointer with :08 seconds to play to give Nazareth a 20-15 advantage.
The Golden Flyers shot 46 percent (6-for-13) from 3-point land in the half. Sorge made her second 3-pointer with less than a minute to play and
Kelly Broderick added another shortly after.
Nazareth held a 40-31 lead at the break.
Kelly scored 25 points (10-for-15) and ripped down 15 boards. Sorge had a stellar game with 20 points (7-for-12), six rebounds, and three steals.
Peck was 3-for-6 for 12 points, while
Julia Brew added nine points and a team-high four assists.
Nazareth's next game will be January 2 when it will host Ithaca at 8 p.m. to begin Empire 8 conference play.
