Women's Hoops Downs Fredonia, 62-51

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Nazareth College women's basketball squad used a balanced attack, with four scorers in double figures to down Fredonia 62-51 on Tuesday night.

Lindsey Kelly led the way with 17 points (7-for-17), followed by Sam Sorge who had 14 (4-for-8).  Veronica Peck added 13 points (4-for-11), while Julia Brew finished with 10 (3-for-13).

Nazareth remains perfect on the season at 3-0, while Fredonia falls to 2-1.

The defense started out strong in the first half, holding the Blue Devils to just 4-for-23 (17.4 percent) from the field. 

Kelly converted a layup early in the first quarter and the Golden Flyers led the rest of the way. 

Peck drilled a 3-pointer with 2:27 remaining in the opening quarter to boost Nazareth's lead to 17-7.

In the second quarter, Kelly made two free throws with 1:06 to play, giving Nazareth its largest lead of the half at 27-15.  The Golden Flyers led 27-16 at the break.

Nazareth kept the momentum going out of intermission and increased its lead to 40-20 late in the third quarter following a Sorge 3-pointer.

Fredonia managed to slice the lead to just five points, 48-43, with 5:37 remaining.

Nazareth, however, finished 6-for-6 down the stretch from the free throw line to help close out the contest. 

Kelly finished with a double-double after notching 17 points and 16 boards.  Brew and Samantha Peebles each pulled down eight rebounds.  Peebles added six points.

Nazareth returns to action on Saturday when it will host Medialle College at 2 p.m. for its home-opener.
