Kelly Dunne began in successful fashion Friday as the Golden Flyers opened their 2015-16 women's basketball season with a 72-43 victory over York College in non-conference action.
The Golden Flyers will look for a second win Saturday when they visit Bryn Mawr at 1 p.m. in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Senior
Lindsey Kelly led all scorers with 21 points. She made 10 of 15 shots from the field and also grabbed seven rebounds. Seniors
Julia Brew and
Sam Sorge each added 13 points. Brew hit three three-pointers, while Sroge and
Veronica Peck each drained two. Peck and senior
Fanny Kilpinen each scored eight points.
A basket by Kelly and a three-pointer by Peck enabled Nazareth to start impressively as the Golden Flyers never trailed. Kelly scored 10 of her points in the first quarter and Peck and Brew each drained three-pointers as the lead grew to 23-7 after 10 minutes. Kelly had three more baskets in the second quarter as Nazareth's lead expanded to 20 points, 41-21.
Sophomore
Samantha Peebles hit two baskets in the third quarter, including a three-pointer as Nazareth's lead ballooned to 31 points, 61-30.
Nazareth shot well from the field, hitting 29 of 55 shots from the floor (52.7 percent), including 8 of 20 shots from three-point range (40 percent).
Dunne gained her first coaching win after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at Brockport. She also played for the Golden Flyers from 2006-10.
