ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth rallied from an early deficit against ECAC West rival Neumann Friday and held on for a 4-3 men's hockey victory over the Knights at the Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.
Nazareth improved to 8-15-1 overall and 4-9-1 in ECAC West action. Neumann is 9-11-4 overall and 4-8-2 in conference play. Nazareth closes out its regular-season schedule Saturday at home against the Knights at 4 p.m. A Nazareth victory Saturday, combined with a Utica victory over Manhattanville, would land the Golden Flyers in fourth place in the conference standings and would result in a Wednesday home game for the first round of the ECAC West playoffs.
In Friday's game, Nazareth fell behind just 36 seconds into the game. Neumann scored again with 3:10 to go in the period to take a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes. The Golden Flyers rallied with one of its strongest periods of the season as it outshot the Knights 19-4 while tying the score at 2-2.
After a flurry of chances in the second period, Nazareth finally got on the scoreboard at 14:36 as senior
Zach Lewis scored his second goal of the season off assists from
Scott Dawson and
Scott Andler. Nazareth tied the score less than a minute later on the power play. Neumann's Kajon McKay was whistled for boarding at 15:10 and sophomore
Chris Murray tied the score for Nazareth with an assist from Dawson.
Nazareth scored twice more in the third period to take control for good. Senior
Mark Zavorin scored the go-ahead goal at 7:25 off a pass from junior
Tom Seravalli. Less than four minutes later, Nazareth capitalized on the power play again as sophomore defenseman
Don Olivieri scored on a blast from the left point following a pass from
Ben Blasko.
Neumann scored a power play goal of its own at 15:33, just six seconds after
Jon-Paul Durso went to the penalty box for boarding. Jon Low was credited with the Knights' goal.
The Knights pulled their goalie for the final 1:10 of the game in favor of a sixth attacker, but they were unable to get the equalizing goal as Nazareth goaltender
Ed Zdolshek stood strong with 11 of his 25 saves in the third period. Braely Torris was in goal for Neumann and made 31 saves.
Prior to Saturday's game, Nazareth will honor its four seniors who will be playing in their final regular-season home game. Lewis, Zavorin will be recognized along with
Jordan Ciccarello and
Reed Smith.
