GENESEO, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth knocked off its second nationally ranked opponent in as many nights Saturday as the Golden Flyers rallied from an early deficit to defeat Geneseo, 4-1, in a non-conference men's hockey game.
Combined with Friday's 2-1 overtime win over Utica, Nazareth improved to 5-12-1 overall by winning its third straight game. The host Knights, ranked 12th nationally by
d3hockey.com and 14th by
USCHO.com, slipped to 13-4 overall. The victory avenged a 3-2 loss to the Knights back on Dec. 15 at Frontier Field.
Freshman
David Seward scored two goals for the Golden Flyers, while sophomore
Don Olivieri and junior
Tom Seravalli also netted goals for the Golden Flyers, who fell behind 1-0 in the first five minutes before rallying in decisive fashion. Sophomore goalie
Ed Zdolshek finished with 46 saves, giving him 80 saves in the two weekend games. He was making his fourth straight start.
Geneseo outshot Nazareth by a margin of 47-19, but the Golden Flyers made the most of their opportunities as three of their goals came off four power play chances, including two 5-on-3 advantages.
After Geneseo grabbed a 1-0 lead on a goal by Zachary Vit at 5:41, Nazareth answered less than four minutes later following Geneseo penalties to Matt Solomon for slashing and Carson Schell for tripping. The Golden Flyers took advantage of the 5-on-3 situation to tie the score as Olivieri scored his first goal as a Golden Flyer off an assist from sophomore
Scott Dawson. Olivieri was appearing in his seventh game for the Golden Flyers since transferring from Utica.
Nazareth scored again in the second period by taking advantage of another 5-on-3 situation. Geneseo's Zach Martin and Nate Brown each drew minor penalties 36 seconds apart. This time Seward scored the power play goal off a pass from freshman
Ben Blasko at 15:18. Just over two minutes later, Nazareth struck again as Seravalli scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season off an assist from freshman
Travis Hill.
The Golden Flyers carried the two-goal lead into the final 20 minutes and Zdolshek stood tall in goal by making 20 of his saves to keep the Knights off the scoreboard. Nazareth scored another power play goal with less than two minutes remaining as Seward tallied his sixth goal of the season as he tipped in a shot from the point by Olivieri.
Nazareth returns to ECAC West play next weekend as the Golden Flyers visit Hobart for games Friday and Saturday. Starting time is 7 p.m. both nights.
