ROCHESTER, NY - Ithaca held off a late second-half rally by Nazareth to defeat the Golden Flyers 63-54. The Bombers are now 12-4 overall and 5-1 in the Empire 8 while Nazareth falls to 6-9, 2-4.
Ithaca led by as much as 17 points in the second half, before Nazareth rallied back. With 10:40 left in the half Ithaca was ahead 47-30 when Nazareth went on a 10-0 run. The rally started with
Lindsey Kelly making two free throws for the Golden Flyers.
Julia Brew then scored from behind the arc followed by a layup from
Veronica Peck and another made three-pointer from Brew to make the score 47-40. Ithaca stopped the scoring drive with a layup by Jenn Escobido but another layup from Kelly and three-pointer by Brew brought the Golden Flyers back within six points, 51-45 with 5:54 remaining in the game.
Ithaca's Escobido scored again at 5:25 followed by field goals from Kathryn Campbell and Mary Kate Tierney to put the visitors back up 12 points, 45-57. Nazareth's Kelly and Brew combined again with a jumper and a three-pointer respectively to pull back within seven points with 2:46 remaining in the game. After that, the Bombers were able to hold off the Golden Flyers to secure their fifth E8 win of the season.
Nazareth was led by Kelly who had 21 points and was 7-of-8 from the line. She also finished with three blocks. Brew finished with 17 points including five from behind the arc for the Golden Flyers. Four of her three-pointers came in the second half. Peck finished with eight points,
Megan Morrison finished with five points,
Melissa Reeves had two and
Hannah Runyon one to round-out the scoring for the Golden Flyers.
Ithaca's Escobido led all scorers with 18 points. Tierney had a game-high 12 rebounds and nine assists along with nine points for the Bombers.
The Bombers had a 42-31 advantage in rebounds and shot 47% from the field in the game. The Golden Flyers were 31% from the field including 27% from behind the arc while Ithaca was just 1-of-7 from three-point land shooting just 14%.
Nazareth is at Alfred State on January 23 for a 6 pm game before returning home on January 28 to face East Ave rival, St. John Fisher at 8 pm.
