ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth benefited from a pair of short-handed goals Saturday in a non-conference men's hockey game against Cortland and the Golden Flyers gained their third win of the season with a 4-2 victory over the Red Dragons.

Nazareth improved to 3-12-1 overall, while Cortland dropped to 4-11-2. The Golden Flyers resume their ECAC West schedule Friday when they host Utica at the Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex at 7 p.m.

Sophomore Julius Tamasy and junior Tom Seravalli each scored short-handed goals to fuel the Golden Flyers' offense. Freshman David Seward and senior Mark Zavorin also scored for Nazareth. Before Saturday's game, Nazareth had scored only one short-handed goal in its two-year history.

In the first period after Nazareth's Geoff Bagnall drew a two-minute slashing penalty, Tamasy scored his third goal of the season from the left slot off a pass from Seravalli, who had stolen the puck behind the Cortland goal.

Cortland rallied in the second period on goals by Adam Bevilacqua and Nick Zappia to take a 2-1 lead, but Nazareth equaled the score at 2-2 on Seward's fourth goal of the season off assists from Justin LaCorte and Rocky Gruttadauria, a transfer from Niagara making just his second appearance of the season.

Zavorin was credited with the game-winning goal at 4:03 of the third period as he connected for his second goal of the season after Bagnall delivered the puck from behind the Cortland goal. Sophomore Jon-Paul Durso also assisted.

With Nazareth clinging to the one-goal lead, Cortland went on the power play again following penalties to Seward and Zach Lewis. With Lewis in the penalty box, Seravalli stole a pass and went in alone on Cortland goalie Lyle Rocker for an unassisted goal, his sixth score of the season.

Cortland played the final 1:50 of the game with a sixth attacker, but was unable to generate a goal against Nazareth netminder Ed Zdolshek, who finished with 27 saves, including 11 in the third period. Rocker had 34 saves for Cortland. Nazareth had a 38-29 edge in shots on goal and went 0-for-2 on the power play.

Nazareth's post-game celebration was tempered a bit by an injury to Tamasy, who injured his left leg after crashing into the boards with 11:51 left in the third period. X-rays revealed a fracture that will sideline him for the remainder of the season.

The Nazareth victory avenged a 5-1 loss to the Red Dragons from Dec. 12.
