ROCHESTER, NY - Nazareth was defeated by Hartwick 72-54 in women's basketball Saturday and falls to 5-8 overall and 1-3 in the Empire 8 Conference. Hartwick remains undefeated in the conference improving to 4-0 and 10-3 overall.
The Hawks built a commanding 26-point lead, 36-10 with 4:47 remaining in the first half. Nazareth shot just 21% from the field (6 for 28) in the first 20 minutes while Hartwick was 44% (15 for 34) including 5-for-9 from behind the arc. Hartwick had a 38-18 lead at the half.
The Golden Flyers outscored the Hawks 36-34 in the second half. Nazareth's
Lindsey Kelly scored on a lay-up to open the second half and bring the Golden Flyers back within 18 points, 38-20. The Hawks answered back with seven straight points to regain a 25-point advantage. Hartwick would keep their distance from Nazareth until the Golden Flyers made a late run to narrow the gap to 18 for the final score of 72-54.
Nazareth shot an impressive 55% from the field in the second half. The Golden Flyers were led by
Veronica Peck and
Hannah Runyon who finished with 11 points each. Runyon shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. Kelly finished with 10 points shooting 4-for-8 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line while
Megan Morrison contributed eight off the bench.
Hartwick had a 39-27 advantage in rebounds. They were led by Brittney Dumas who had a game-high 10 rebounds. Dumas also led all scorers with 23 points shooting 11-of-19 from the field. Maria Foglia contributed 11 points and Taylor Vonasek had 10 for the Hawks.
Nazareth is home again next weekend hosting two Empire 8 conference games starting with Utica on Friday, January 17 at 8 pm and Ithaca Saturday at 4 pm.
