Oswego outscores Nazareth, 5-3

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nationally ranked Oswego erupted for three goals in the first period Friday against host Nazareth and the Lakers went on to take a 5-3 men's hockey victory over the Golden Flyers in a non-conference game at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.

Matt Galati scored two goals for the Lakers, who improved to 8-2-2 overall and extended their unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2). Oswego is ranked 10th nationally in the latest poll from d3hockey.com and 12th by U.S. College Hockey Online.

Freshman David Seward scored twice for the Golden Flyers, who slipped to 1-10-1 overall. Sophomore Jon-Paul Durso also scored for Nazareth. The Golden Flyers are home again Saturday for a non-conference game against Stonehill at 2 p.m.

Oswego got off to a good start against the Golden Flyers by scoring three times before the game was 12 minutes old. Galati opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 1:57 after he took advantage of a Nazareth defensive giveaway. He added his second goal less than five minutes later with a power-play score with assists from Alex Botten and Bobby Gertsakis.

Chris Waterstreet made it 3-0 at 11:13 off an assist from Brandon Adams.

Nazareth regrouped after the first intermission and played a bit more inspired in the second period as the Golden Flyers scored twice to close the gap to 3-2. Seward scored first as he converted a power-play opportunity with assists from Justin LaCorte and Zach Lewis at 4:35. Less than 10 minutes later, Durso scored off an assist from Tom Mediak.

Nazareth's Chris Murray was whistled for a boarding penalty at 14:35 and the Lakers took advantage by scoring on the power play as Dylan Smith converted a pass from Shawn Hulshof at 16:06.

Nazareth pulled back to within a goal at 4-3 at 17:34 as Seward scored his second goal of the game on assists from Ben Blasko and Mark Zavorin.

The score went unchanged until late in the third period when the Lakers sealed the win with an empty-net goal by Morgan Bonner.

Nazareth had a 26-23 edge in shots on goal. Oswego goalie Matt Zawadzki made 23 saves, while Nazareth's Ed Zdolshek had 18.
