ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth built a first-quarter lead and never trailed Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference men's lacrosse game at Hartwick. The Golden Flyers prevailed 18-10 against the Hawks to improve to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in conference games.
Nazareth returns to action Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. as the Golden Flyers will travel to Alfred to finish a suspended game from April 10 in which the score was tied 6-6 at halftime. The game will be resumed at the start of the third quarter. Hartwick dropped to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in conference games.
Nazareth had nine different goal scorers with freshman
Troy Haefele scoring four times and freshman
Luke Wooters contributing three goals and two assists. Junior
Collin Clark contributed two goals and three assists, while juniors
Chris Aycock and
Chris Peterson and sophomore
Kyle Fanning each scored twice.
Trevar Haefele,
Will Fallo and
Chris Benza also scored, the latter being the first of his career.
Sophomore faceoff specialist
Drew Simoneau won 23 of 29 draws and scooped up a school-record 19 ground balls as Nazareth controlled the time of possession. Freshman goalie
Scott Brown had 10 saves.
Nazareth scored just eight seconds into the game as
Troy Haefele converted a quick pass from his brother Trevar, who added a goal three minutes later. Nazareth expanded its lead to 7-3 by halftime and 11-6 after three quarters.
Two more flurries followed in the fourth quarter. First the Golden Flyers scored three times in a 25-second stretch with Wooters scoring twice and
Collin Clark getting the other goal. Later on Nazareth scored four times in a 2:13 stretch with goals from Fanning, Aycock, Clark and Benza.
Wooters' three goals upped his team-leading total to 33 to go with 13 assists and 46 points.
Troy Haefele has 26 goals and 36 points. Simoneau's 19 ground balls boosted his season total to 128 as he closes in on the Nazareth single-season record of 141 set by Terry Goetz in 1995.
