Nazareth falls to William Smith, 62-53

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Sophomore Julia Brew scored a team-high 17 points for eighth-seeded Nazareth Thursday, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Flyers dropped a women's basketball consolation game to fourth-seeded William Smith, 62-53, in the Wendy's College Classic played at RIT.

Nazareth, now 2-4 overall, will play again Saturday in the seventh-place consolation game against RIT at 1 p.m. That game will be played at Brockport. RIT lost to Brockport, 61-57 in overtime, in the other consolation game.

William Smith raced to a 20-6 lead in the first eight minutes, but Nazareth rallied to close within five, 28-23, by halftime. The Golden Flyers then opened the second half with a 16-5 scoring run to take a 39-33 advantage with less than 14 minutes to play. Brew spearheaded the run by hitting a pair of three-point baskets and sophomore Lindsey Kelly scored with 13:17 left to give Nazareth its largest lead.

The Herons chipped away at Nazareth's lead, but the Golden Flyers still led 51-50 following a basket by Maria Allocco with 3:41 to go. The Herons, however, regained the lead for good, 52-51, on a basket by Melanie Patterson with 2:10 to go. That basket touched off a 12-2 scoring run that the Herons used to pull away. Five straight points by Sasha Borenstein extended William Smith's lead to 57-53 with less than a minute to play.

Brew's 17 points included 5-for-7 shooting from three-point range. She also had five rebounds. Allocco contributed 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Veronica Peck had nine points and three steals.

William Smith's Erin O'Brien had a game-high 21 points on 9-for-15 shooting. Borenstein added 13 points and Chloe Hayter had nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Nazareth went 21 for 64 from the field (32.8 percent) and 3 for 7 from the free throw line. Willilam Smith had a 46-41 rebounding advantage.
