BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth pulled within six points in the final 33 seconds following a three-point basket by senior Megan Morrison, but Brockport converted all four of their free throws in the last 30 seconds to pull away from the Golden Flyers 64-55 in a non-conference women's basketball game on Saturday. The contest was the championship game of Brockport's Tip-Off Classic. Sophomore Lindsey Kelly had her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds, including seven offensive boards.
With the loss, Nazareth stands at 1-1 overall to begin the season. With the victory, the Golden Eagles open the season with a 2-0 record.
Despite trailing by 15 points in the opening minutes of the second half, the Golden Flyers battled back to nearly climb within one possession of Brockport in the final five minutes of regulation. Hannah Rehbaum's three-pointer 3:32 into the second stanza provided the Golden Eagles with their largest lead of the game, however, Nazareth answered with the next seven points to cut the score to 37-29 with 13:44 to play in regulation. Sophomore Julia Brew had five points during the run as she started it with a two-point basket and capped it with a three. Morrison also converted two free throws that were sandwiched between Brew's buckets.
The Golden Flyers kept their deficit within 10 points before trimming Brockport's lead to five points, 47-42, about seven minutes later. During the run, junior Hannah Runyon connected on two three-point baskets and Kelly had a layup and a free throw. With just under four minutes remaining in regulation, sophomore Veronica Peck had an opportunity to cut Nazareth's deficit to one possession, but her layup attempt was off the rim. Brockport answered with a 6-0 run to reclaim a double-digit lead, 55-44, with 1:40 to play in the second half.
In the final minute, the Golden Flyers again attempted to rally, and Morrison's three-pointer cut Nazareth's deficit to six points. The Golden Eagles' free throws secured their victory. Brockport finished 17-21 (81 percent) from the free throw stripe for the game. During Nazareth's furious rally attempt, Kelly had a layup and a pair of free throws before Morrison's bucket.
In the first half, Brockport opened a 10-4 advantage in the opening 4:44 of the period. After allowing the Golden Eagles to extend their lead to 10 points, the Golden Flyers trimmed their deficit to five points, 18-13, with 6:12 to play in the half. Runyon connected on her first three-point basket, which was followed by a two-point jumper by Kelly on Nazareth's ensuing possession. Kelly and Brew each had offensive rebounds to keep the possession alive. With 10 seconds to play in the half, Faith Welch connected on a layup to give Brockport a 28-18 lead at the break.
In addition to Kelly's 17 points, Runyon finished with 14 points, which ties her career-high. Runyon connected on 4-7 shots from beyond the arc. Brew also recorded 11 points. Peck tallied a team-high six assists to set up several scoring opportunities.
Brockport finished with a 40-34 advantage in total rebounds, however, Kelly's 11 boards was a game-high. Rehbaum led the Golden Eagles with a game-high 20 points, and Erin Cunningham finished with a team-high seven rebounds.
Nazareth has its home opener on Tuesday evening when the Golden Flyers host Fredonia in a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
