ASTON, PA. -- Neumann scored one goal in each period and held visiting Nazareth scoreless to defeat the Golden Flyers 3-0 in an ECAC West hockey game on Friday evening. Nazareth sophomore
Ed Zdolshek amassed a game-high 37 saves in the loss. Freshman
Chris Murray tallied seven shots to lead the Golden Flyers' offense.
With the loss, Nazareth drops to 0-3-1 in ECAC West Conference games and 1-3-1 overall. Following the victory, the Knights improve to 1-2-1 in conference games and overall.
After almost 19 minutes of scoreless action to open the contest, Neumann's Ryan Luiten scored his first goal of the season. Luiten's goal came with only 1:02 remaining in the first period. Teammate Mikko Virtanen was credited with the assist.
The Knights stretched their lead to two goals with a power play goal roughly nine minutes into the second period. Shayne Morrissey scored the man-up goal. It was his second goal of the season. D'Lane Sather and Chris Bournazos had the assists.
Morrissey scored his second goal of the game at the 10:32 mark of the third period, which gave Neumann the 3-0 advantage. Bournazos was credited with his second assist of the game. Dan McDougall also had an assist on Morrissey's second tally of the contest.
The Knights' defense held the Golden Flyers to 28 shots. In addition to Murray's seven shots, sophomores
Scott Andler and
Scott Dawson tallied three shots apiece. Senior
Mark Zavorin, juniors
Tom Seravalli and
Julius Tamasy, and sophomore
Matt Conway each added two shots. Braely Torris stopped Nazareth's 28 shots to earn his first shutout of the season.
The Golden Flyers finished with a 38-35 edge in faceoffs won. Tamasy was 14-10 on his faceoffs and freshman
Ben Blasko won 12 of his 21 faceoffs. Nazareth continues to look for consistency from its power play as the Golden Flyers were 0-4 with the man advantage against the Knights. Neumann finished 1-3 on the power play with Morrissey's goal.
The Golden Flyers are in action again on Saturday for another ECAC West Hockey game. Nazareth plays at Manhattanville at 4 p.m.
