Nazareth finishes Dig Pink Invitational with two more wins

Golden Flyers defeat both Cazenovia and Keystone in three sets

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. -- Nazareth's women's volleyball team finished the Dig Pink Invitational with two more victories to give the Golden Flyers a 4-0 record over the weekend. Nazareth defeated host Cazenovia in three sets by the scores of 25-13, 25-16, 29-27, then knocked off Keystone in another three-set match by the scores of 25-15, 25-18, 25-14.

With the victories, the Golden Flyers improve to 20-6 overall. With the loss, Cazenovia falls to 5-22 overall. Keystone fell to 11-10 overall following its loss to Nazareth.

In the Golden Flyers' match against Cazenovia, junior Kassandra Buseck had a team-high nine kills with only one attack error to lead the Golden Flyers. Sophomore Jennifer Hicks finished with six kills. Eight other Nazareth players combined for 19 additional kills. Freshman Maureen Thayer finished with 15 assists to direct the Golden Flyers' attack.

Defensively, juniors Katherine Race and Chelsea Beecher each finished with six digs. Thayer thwarted a Cazenovia attempt at the net with a solo block. Hicks also had two assisted blocks.

Thayer, Beecher, and junior Maria Allocco all amassed three service aces. The Golden Flyers finished with 14 total aces.

Against Keystone, Thayer had 18 assists and five service aces. Nazareth tallied 11 total aces during the match. Hicks and Buseck each tallied eight kills while Allocco recorded seven kills. Hicks converted her kills on 13 attempts and did not commit a hitting error. The Golden Flyers recorded hitting percentages of .53, .38, and .19 in the respective three sets. Nazareth was especially efficient in the opening set where they recorded 13 kills and three errors on only 19 attempts.

Defensively, freshman Cady Messmer tallied a team-high nine digs, and classmate Kaitlyn Relyea had six digs. Hicks finished with two solo blocks. Thayer, Hicks, Buseck, and Allocco each also added one assisted block apiece.

Nazareth travels to Buffalo State on October 16th for a non-conference match before returning to the Kidera Gymnasium to host the second round of the Empire 8 Crossover on October 25th-26th. The Golden Flyers open against Elmira on the 25th at 7 p.m.
