ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior
Olivia Derleth scored two goals for host Nazareth to lead the Golden Flyers to a 2-0 victory over Stevens in an Empire 8 women's soccer game on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, Nazareth improves to 3-0 in Empire 8 games and 7-3-2 overall. The Golden Flyers have won three of their last four contests. With the loss, the Ducks fall to 2-1 in conference games and 6-6 overall.
Derleth's two goals were separated by only 6:11. Her first goal of the contest came at the 28:33 mark of the first half. Dribbling on the right side of the field outside the 18-box, Derleth lofted the ball over the goalie and into the left side of the goal.
Derleth found the back of the net again in the 35th minute following a well-timed cross from junior
Kaitlyn Sowyrda. Sowyrda dribbled down the left side of the field. When she reached about five yards from the endline, Sowyrda sent a cross to the six-yard box. Sowyrda's cross was placed perfectly for Derleth to head past Stevens' goalie, Evelyn Ting.
In the second half, the Golden Flyers threatened throughout the period. Nazareth's best scoring opportunity happened with about 27 minutes in regulation when the Golden Flyers had two corner kick opportunities and three shots. Howell had two shots. One shot was blocked and the second was saved by Ting. Derleth had the third shot for Nazareth, which was also saved by Ting.
Nazareth finished with a commanding 28-4 advantage in total shots, including 13-3 in shots on goal. The Golden Flyers had a 10-3 advantage in corner kick chances. Senior
Abbie Carey made two saves in goal to earn her second consecutive shutout. Ting finished with 10 saves to prevent Nazareth from pulling away.
The Golden Flyers are home for their next three games, all of which are Empire 8 contests. Nazareth hosts Elmira on October 13th, sixth-ranked Ithaca on October 19th, and St. John Fisher on October 23rd. The Golden Flyers are currently tied for first in the Empire 8 standings with Ithaca.
