Stevens outlasts Nazareth, 67-60

Ducks outscore Golden Flyers 10-3 in overtime

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Stevens outscored Nazareth 10-3 in overtime to defeat the Golden Flyers 67-60 in a women's Empire 8 basketball game on Saturday. Trailing 57-54, senior Erica Shaw connected on a three-point basket at the regulation buzzer to force the game into overtime. Shaw and freshman Lindsey Kelly finished with 18 points apiece to lead Nazareth's offense.

With the loss, the Golden Flyers fall to 3-9 overall and 0-2 in Empire 8 games. The Ducks improve to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in conference games following the victory.

Nazareth opened the game with two free throws by Shaw, then Stevens answered with a 10-0 run. The Golden Flyers chipped away at their deficit throughout much of the first half, and Nazareth tied the game on a layup by sophomore Melissa Reeves, 20-20, with just over two minutes to play in the half. Shaw connected on a three-point shot from about 30-feet out at the buzzer to provide the Golden Flyers a 27-24 lead at the break.

In the second half, Nazareth used a 15-4 run midway through the second half to break a 35-35 tie. The scoring run gave Nazareth a 50-39 lead with just over eight minutes to play in regulation. The run was ignited by a three by junior Megan Morrison and capped by Shaw's third three-pointer of the game. Shaw also connected on her second shot from beyond the arc during the run while Kelly connected on two jumpers and Morrison added two free throws.

The Ducks rallied by connecting on three three-point shots during their 18-4 run, which gave Stevens a 57-54 lead with 14 seconds remaining. Dylan Krause hit two of the Ducks' three-point baskets. Following a Nazareth timeout, Shaw connected on her buzzer-beating three-pointer to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, Kelly converted a three-point play to give the Golden Flyers an early 60-57 lead. The Ducks' tenacious defense held Nazareth to 1-5 (20 percent) shooting in the extra session while shooting 4-9 (44 percent) from the field to pull away.

Sophomore Maria Allocco added six points while freshman Veronica Peck and Morrison each scored five points. Reeves finished with four points.

Stevens had four players finish in double-digits led by Miranda Ripken, who had 17 points. Avis Benjamin scored 15 points, followed by Dylan Krause and Lisa Tessitore, who tallied 11 points apiece.

The Ducks finished with a 39-38 edge in total rebounds, including a 14-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. Krause and Benjamin each had nine rebounds while Allocco and Kelly each recorded six rebounds for Nazareth.

The Golden Flyers travel to Elmira on Friday for another conference game before returning to Nazareth to host Utica on Saturday.
