Second-half surge lifts Nazareth

GENESEO, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth scored both of its goals in the second half Thursday and then held off a late surge by Geneseo to take a 2-1 women's soccer victory over the Blue Knights in a non-conference game.

The win boosted Nazareth's overall record to 2-1-3, while Geneseo remained winless at 0-5.

After a scoreless first half, Nazareth got on the scoreboard early in the second half when junior midfielder Kristina McCann played a ball into the box and sophomore Ashtin Argentieri knocked a shot that settled inside the left post for her team-leading third goal of the season.

The Golden Flyers made it 2-0 about 20 minutes after that as senior Christine Belding played a ball to junior Olivia Derleth, who also blasted a shot inside the left post for her second goal of the season.

Geneseo pressured the Flyers after that and finally broke through for a goal with 6:15 left as Emily Novak scored off a rebound of a shot by Stephanie Clookey.

Geneseo had a 15-11 edge in shots, while Nazareth had four corner kicks to Geneseo's two. Junior Abbie Carey made six saves in 90 minutes of play in goal for the Golden Flyers., who are back home Saturday for a non-conference game against St. Lawrence at 3 p.m.
