Women’s Soccer Falls Short in Battle of the Beaks, 3-1

ROCHESTER, NY (nazathletics.com) – The Nazareth women's soccer team (7-3-1, 5-2-0) competed in their annual Battle of the Beaks match versus the St. John Fisher Cardinals (11-1-0, 7-0-0) on Saturday. The Golden Flyers came up short this time around, losing 3-1 on the road and ending their 5-game winning streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • This match got off to a quick start on both ends of the pitch. Nazareth managed 2 shots and 2 corners in the opening 2 minutes, including a header off the post by Shannon Sgombick.
  • It was at the other end however, that first blood was drawn by the Cardinals. They struck their first shot of the game past Nazareth goalkeeper Katriana Walls just 3:49 into the action.
  • The offense tapered a bit for both squads after the hot start as they continued trading shot attempts and fouls, with the Golden Flyers leading heavily in both stats.
  • Despite Nazareth carrying play, St. John Fisher doubled their lead at the 37-minute mark to go up 2-0. That score persisted into half time.
  • To open the second half, it was more of the same for the Cardinals who added to their lead less than 3 minutes in. The Golden Flyers found themselves in a 3-0 hole with 43 minutes to dig their way out.
  • Both teams tightened up defensively, as the match went on without a shot attempt for 12 minutes of play. The shot that broke that streak was a self-inflicted one by the Cardinals that resulted in an own goal, giving Nazareth life at 3-1 with 30 minutes remaining.
  • The Golden Flyers weren't able to solve the opposing goalkeeper from that point forward, as they went on to lose the contest 3-1.

MATCH NOTES
  • Nazareth led the match in shots on goal (8-4), shot attempts (11-6), and corners (5-1).
