Brittany Wilson and
Katie Kollar combined to score 35 points for visiting Nazareth Saturday as the Golden Flyers closed out their 2011-12 women's basketball season with a 70-61 victory over St. John Fisher.
Nazareth ended its season with an overall record of 12-13, including a 5-9 mark in Empire 8 Conference play. Nazareth finished in a tie for fifth place in the conference standings. Fisher slipped to 11-14 overall and 7-7 in the E8, good for fourth in the E8. The win was Nazareth's second this season over Fisher in three meetings.
Kollar's 17 points included four three-point baskets and enabled her to break the Nazareth single-season record with 69 treys, surpassing the mark held by Shannon Dwyer since 1988-89. Wilson's 18 points were a game high and came on 6 for 13 shooting with one three-pointer. She also had nine rebounds.
Nazareth never trailed in the game and led by as many as 16 points in the first half, 27-11, following a three-pointer by Kollar with 6:45 left. Fisher closed the half with a 13-7 run, including a three-point basket by Avery Light in the closing seconds to pull within 32-24 at the break. The Golden Flyers connected on 6 of 10 three-point baskets in the first 20 minutes, including three by Kollar, who scored 11 of her points. Wilson added nine points in the first half.
Nazareth stayed in front in the second half as senior
Erica Shaw scored all 10 of her points. Senior
Danielle Chamberlain sank a pair of free throws with 3:07 to go to give Nazareth a seemingly safe 14-point lead at 61-47. Fisher stormed back and drew within four, 62-58, following a basket by Portia Velasco with 1:21 to go.
Nazareth preserved the win by making free throws.
Brittany Patenaude and Wilson each hit two free throws to extend Nazareth's lead to 66-58 with less than a minute to play. A basket by
Brittany TallChief and two more free throws by Kollar extended the final margin to 70-61. TallChief finished with a team-best 11 rebounds.
Wilson's 18 points boosted her career total to 1,186, good for seventh place on the Golden Flyers' all-time scoring list.
