Stevens defeats Nazareth, 58-52

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Visiting Stevens defeated Nazareth, 58-52, in a women's Empire 8 conference basketball game Saturday. With the loss, the Golden Flyers fall to 11-12 overall and 4-9 in the E8, while Stevens improves to 11-12 overall and 8-5 in conference play.
 
Nazareth was unable to score in the first five minutes of play, causing the Ducks to gain an 11-point lead. The Golden Flyers' first points were scored 5:56 into play with a three-pointer by senior Brittany Patenaude. Patenaude scored after a missed three-point attempt from Stevens' senior Victoria Webber. With 12:36 left in the first half, Nazareth senior Katie Kollar began a rally for the Golden Flyers with a three-point basket. Within five minutes of Kollar's three-pointer, senior Brittany Wilson added two points, Kollar added an additional three points, and senior Brittany TallChief added two points with a layup. With 7:54 left in the first half, the score idled at Stevens 21, Nazareth 13. Two minutes later, sophomore Rebecca Rumschick scored a three-pointer for Nazareth, followed by Wilson's second layup with 2:35 left in the half. The Golden Flyers' final two points of the half were scored with a layup by freshman Maria Allocco. At the end of the first half, Stevens led Nazareth 25-20.
 
The Golden Flyers rallied again in the second half, taking the lead 29-28 with 16:32 left on the clock. Unfortunately, the Ducks retaliated by scoring 16 consecutive points, bringing the score to 44-30 Stevens. Although Nazareth tried to regain their lead, the Ducks continued to pull away. With 10:16 left in play, Stevens lead Nazareth 50-33. Despite the dire 17 point difference, Nazareth was able to finish the game trailing by a mere six points (58-52 Stevens). Nazareth's high scorer for the second half was TallChief with nine points.
 
At the game's completion, Kollar led Nazareth's offense with 13 points, while TallChief tallied a team-high four blocks. Nazareth's next game will be February 14 at Penn State Behrend.
