ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior
Ben Waldman opened the scoring for host Nazareth about five minutes into the second period. Buffalo State answered with two goals in a span of 70 seconds and the Bengals claimed a 2-1 non-conference victory in Saturday evening's hockey game.
Following the loss, Nazareth slips to 4-8-1 overall. Buffalo State improves to 5-7-1 overall with the victory. The Golden Flyers will take a month off before resuming their schedule with a non-conference game against Cortland Jan. 8 at the Sports Centre at MCC.
Waldman's unassisted goal gave the Golden Flyers the 1-0 lead 4:46 into the second period. Waldman weaved his way past two Buffalo State defenders and put a low wrist shot past Bengals' goalie Kevin Carr for his fifth goal of the season.
Buffalo State answered about 10 minutes after Waldman's goal. Shane Avery put the Bengals on the board at the 13:37 mark of the second period. Zach Hale and Mike Zannella recorded assists on Avery's goal. Then, with Nazareth's
Julius Tamasy in the penalty box for hooking, Zanella took advantage by scoring his team-leading 12th goal of the season for the game-winning tally. Todd Graham and Anthony Orange were credited with assists on Zannella's power play tally.
Buffalo St. finished 1-5 with the man advantage. The Bengals held the Golden Flyers to 0-4 on the power play. Nazareth amassed five power play goals in Friday evening's game against Western New England.
Freshman
Joe Gladnick made a game-high 33 saves, including 25 through the final two periods to keep the Golden Flyers within one goal. Carr finished with 25 saves for Buffalo State.
Waldman tallied a game-high six shots on goal followed by junior
Reed Smith with four shots on goal and freshman
Scott Dawson with three shots on net. Trevor McKinney, Brett Hope, Drew Klin, and Graham tallied four shots apiece to lead the Bengals.
