AURORA, N.Y. -- Freshman
Lindsey Kelly scored 22 points and sophomore
Michelle Melanson added 13 for visiting Nazareth Tuesday as the Golden Flyers dominated Wells from start to finish in a 72-39 non-conference women's basketball victory.
The game was just the second meeting ever between the two schools in women's basketball and the first since 1977. The victory boosted Nazareth's overall record to 2-5. Wells dropped to 1-6. Nazareth returns home Friday to host Houghton at 6 p.m.
The point totals for Kelly and Melanson both were career highs as the tandem combined to make 15 of 20 shots, including three three-point baskets.
Against the Express, Nazareth scored the first seven points of the game -- two baskets by Kelly and a three-pointer by freshman
Veronica Peck -- and the Golden Flyers continued to expand their lead. The lead reached 19 points, 40-21, by halftime as Kelly scored 15 points on 7-for-8 shooting and Melanson added 10 points by hitting 4 of 6 shots.
Nazareth also used a 7-0 run to open the second half as Kelly made two more baskets and a free throw and senior
Erica Shaw hit two free throws to extend the lead to 47-21. Nazareth's largest lead of the game was 38 points, 67-29, on a basket by Kelly with 8:51 to play.
Kelly grabbed a team-best eight rebounds in addition to her 22 points, which came on 10 for 12 shooting. Melanson's 13 points included three three-pointers. Freshman
Gwen Dougherty had seven rebounds, while Shaw contributed five assists and sophomore
Hannah Runyon had four.
