SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Freshman Scott Dawson scored a goal and was named tournament MVP for Nazareth Sunday as the Golden Flyers rallied from a two-goal disadvantage to defeat Curry, 4-2, in a non-conference men's hockey game.

The victory enabled the Golden Flyers to claim the championship of the Skidmore Invitational and improved their overall record to 3-7-1. Curry is 3-3 overall. The Golden Flyers reached the championship game after settling for a 3-3 tie with Skidmore Saturday and then defeating the Thoroughbreds 2-1 in the post-game shootout.

In addition to Dawson earning tournament MVP honors, freshman forward Scott Andler and freshman goaltender Ed Zdolshek were named to the all-tournament team.

"It's a real credit to our guys," said Nazareth Coach George Roll, who watched his team fall behind 2-0 in the first period. "We started out a little sluggish, but we had some good shifts in the second period and really picked up some confidence."

Nazareth benefitted largely from a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct assessed to Curry's Nicholas Coppola for hitting from behind at 14:53 in the second period. Nazareth capitalized by scoring three power play goals in a span of 2:52 to take the lead for good, 3-2.

Sophomore Julius Tamasy broke the scoring drought for Nazareth at 15:36 with his second goal of the season off assists from senior Ben Waldman and junior Mark Zavorin. Nazareth tied the score at 17:02 as freshman Jon-Paul Durso scored his first goal of the season off assists from junior Reed Smith and freshman Kyle Schwartz. Just 1:26 later, Andler netted the game-winner as he scored his first goal of the season with an assist to Schwartz.

Dawson added an insurance goal in the third period with assists from Durso and freshman defenseman Matt Conway. Zdolshek, meanwhile, stood strong in the final 20 minutes as he made 17 of his 26 saves in that stretch to keep the Colonels off the scoreboard. Nazareth finished with a 30-28 advantage in shots overall.

Curry scored both of its goals in the first period as Michael Lopez and Ian DeLong converted even-strength opportunities just 65 seconds apart.

Nazareth is idle this weekend, then is home for a pair of non-conference games at the Sports Centre at MCC on Dec. 7 and 8 vs. Western New England and Buffalo State respectively.
