ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Freshman
Lindsey Kelly amassed a game-high 21 points to lead the host Golden Flyers to a 58-55 non-conference victory over Keuka in the women's Onnie's Classic basketball tournament, hosted by Nazareth. After hitting only 1-17 three-point attempts in the first half, the Golden Flyers connected on six of eight shots from beyond the arc in the second half to overcome their early deficit.
With the victory, Nazareth improves to 1-1 overall. The Storm fall to 0-1 overall to begin their season. Nazareth will play Vassar at 1 p.m. Sunday in its second game of the tournament. Keuka will play Brockport at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Kelly scored Nazareth's final five points of the game in the last minute of action to provide the Golden Flyers with the victory. With the score tied at 53 points, Kelly converted a three-point play with 56 seconds remaining in regulation to give Nazareth the lead for good. Kelly also had a layup to stretch the lead to three points in the closing seconds. Keuka's Danielle Gravel's attempted three-point shot just before the horn sounded rimmed out. Sophomore
Melissa Reeves grabbed the defensive rebound to secure the victory.
With Nazareth struggling to score out of the gate, Keuka scored the first nine points during the first three minutes of Saturday's action. Sophomore
Maria Allocco had Nazareth's first basket after grabbing an offensive rebound. Despite their initial offensive challenges, the Golden Flyers remained in the game in the first half by converting eight of nine first half free throw attempts. The Golden Flyers prevented the Storm from extending their lead to double-digits during the first half and settled for a six-point deficit, 25-19, following free throws by sophomore
Hannah Runyon and a three-point basket by freshman
Veronica Peck.
Keuka stretched its advantage to 12 points roughly four minutes into the second half. An 8-0 scoring run by Kelly, Runyon, and junior
Megan Morrison trimmed the Golden Flyers' deficit to 37-33. Back-to-back three-point baskets by sophomore
Michelle Melanson and Runyon tied the score 40-40 with 10:35 to play in regulation.
On Nazareth's ensuing possession, Peck converted two free throws to give the Golden Flyers their first lead of the contest. Nazareth extended its lead to six points twice before Keuka tied the contest at 53 apiece with just over a minute to play in the half.
Nazareth finished 13-17 (77 percent) from the charity stripe for the game compared to 6-10 from the free throw line for Keuka.
Following Kelly, Allocco and Runyon each scored eight points while Morrison and Melanson added six points apiece.
Jessica Bandrowski tallied a team-high 17 points for the Storm. Gravel finished with 13 points and Casey Chamberlain amassed a game-high 12 rebounds to lead Keuka to a 42-32 advantage in total rebounds.
