Hobart downs Nazareth, 7-3

Golden Flyers drop to 2-7 overall

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Hobart scored three unanswered goals in the third period Saturday to pull away for a 7-3 men's hockey victory over Nazareth in ECAC West action at the Sports Centre at MCC.

The victory enabled the sixth-ranked Statesmen to complete a weekend sweep of the Golden Flyers as they blanked Nazareth 3-0 on Friday. Hobart remained unbeaten overall at 6-0-2. The Statesmen are 3-0-1 in conference play. Nazareth dropped its sixth straight and fell to 2-7 overall and 0-5 in the tough ECAC West.

Hobart was clinging to a 4-3 lead until midway through the third period. The Statesmen got goals from Ryan Michel, Frank Salituro and Tommaso Traversa to pull away.

Nazareth took a 1-0 lead at 3:44 of the opening period as junior Zach Lewis converted on a 5-on-3 power play as he knocked in a rebound of a shot by Reed Smith. Hobart tied the score with a power play goal of its own two minutes later as Ryan Corcoran netted his first goal of the season off assists from Brad McBride and Harry Radovich.

A goal by Hobart's Ben Gamache gave a Statesmen a 2-1 lead, but Nazareth tied it on an unassisted goal by Scott Dawson, who weaved his way through the Hobart defense to score his third goal of the season.

Salituro and Keith Clarke scored in the second period for Hobart to extend the lead to 4-2, but Nazareth's Tom Seravalli brought Nazareth to within 4-3 as he scored from a difficult angle along the left-wing boards with :24 left in the second period. Sean de Herder picked up the assist.

The score went unchanged until 10:39 of the third when Michel scored to trigger Hobart's three-goal flurry, including the final goal by Traversa into an empty net.

Hobart had a 38-23 edge in shots and goalie Martin Aussenhofer made 20 saves to gain his second win of the season. For Nazareth, freshman Ed Zdolshek made his fifth straight start in goal and made 31 saves.

Nazareth plays again after Thanksgiving as part of the Skidmore Tournament Saturday and Sunday. Nazareth plays the Thoroughbreds Saturday at 2 p.m. Curry and Morrisville will play in the second game at 5. Consolation and championship games are Sunday at 1 and 4 p.m. respectively.
