BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Junior Mark Zavorin scored five goals and added one assist Tuesday as visiting Nazareth overcame an early deficit to defeat Brockport in a non-conference men's hockey game, 7-2, at Tuttle North Arena.

Nazareth improved to 2-1 overall while Brockport was playing in its season opener.

Three of Zavorin's goals came on the power play – one in each period – and he now has a team-best six goals. Sophomore forward Julius Tamasy added one goal and four assists and freshman defenseman Scott Dawson also scored for the Golden Flyers, who led 3-1 after the first period and 4-2 after the second. Junior defenseman Reed Smith was credited with three assists. Dawson also had an assist as did freshman Packy Jones and senior Ben Waldman. Freshman goalie Ed Zdolshek followed his brilliant 50-save season-opening performance with 36 saves against the Golden Eagles.

Brockport scored just :30 into the game as Troy Polino beat Zdolshek for an unassisted tally. Nazareth answered just 30 seconds later as Zavorin took advantage of a Brockport penalty to score his second goal of the season off an assist from Tamasy.

Zavorin scored again at 9:10, then Dawson scored just two minutes later to give the Golden Flyers a two-goal cushion. In the second period, Brockport got a goal from Jesse Facchini to cut the lead to 3-2, but Zavorin completed the hat trick less than three minutes later as he knocked in a rebound off a power play blast by Waldman.

Nazareth added three unanswered goals in the third period. Zavorin netted a power-play goal as the Golden Flyers benefited from a two-man advantage at 12:13. Less than a minute later Tamasy scored another power play goal on a quick wrist shot from the right side with Zavorin assisting.

With two minutes to go, Zavorin and Tamasy teamed up again with Zavorin finishing the play with a nifty backhanded shot that beat Brockport goalie Aaron Green over the left shoulder.

Brockport had a 38-36 edge in shots, but Nazareth went four for six on the power play.

The Golden Flyers are home Saturday for another non-conference game against Salve Regina at 7 p.m. at the Sports Centre at MCC.
