GENESEO, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth suffered its first men's hockey defeat of the season Saturday as Geneseo built a two-goal advantage and held on for a 2-1 win over the Golden Flyers at Wilson Ice Arena.
The win for Geneseo avenged a 3-2 overtime loss to the Golden Flyers on Thursday in Nazareth's first game ever. Both teams now are 1-1. Nazareth visits Brockport Tuesday for a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
Junior
Mark Zavorin scored the lone goal for the Golden Flyers. That came with just :39 remaining and after Nazareth pulled its goalie,
Joe Gladnick, in favor of an extra attacking player.
Tom Seravalli and
Jordan Ciccarello earned assists on the goal.
Gladnick, like his teammate
Ed Zdolshek on Thursday, played brilliantly in goal for the Golden Flyers in his first start. He made 34 saves to keep the game close.
The game was scoreless after an evenly played first period with Geneseo generating 12 shots to Nazareth's nine. However, a Nazareth penalty for too many men on the ice late in the first period carried over to the second and Geneseo took advantage to score the game's first goal. Geneseo's Rich Manley netted the power-play score for the Knights off assists from Tyler Brickler and Zachary Vit just :14 into the second period.
The score went unchanged until 12:08 of the third period when the Knights scored another power play goal. This time freshman
James Redman was assessed a five-minute contact-to-the-head penalty in addition to a game misconduct. Geneseo scored again as Brickler converted with assists from Manley and Jack Caradonna.
Nazareth's goal came as a result of a 6-on-4 advantage. In addition to having the extra attacker on the ice, Nazareth also benefitted from a Geneseo five-minute major penalty to David Ripple for elbowing.
"I thought we actually played a little better than we did Thursday," said Nazareth Coach
George Roll. "We need to stay out the penalty box and win a few faceoffs."
Geneseo had a 36-22 advantage in shots and won 57 of 85 faceoffs. Nazareth also was assessed 11 penalties for 33 minutes. Nazareth played without freshman captain
Scott Dawson, who had to sit out after being disqualified for fighting in Thursday's game. He will be back in the lineup Tuesday.
