ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Buffalo State defeated Nazareth 7-1 in game one and 12-0 in game two to claim both games of Wednesday afternoon's non-conference softball doubleheader. Junior
Brittany Patenaude had two hits in the first game and one hit in the second game.
Following the losses, the Golden Flyers drop to 4-24 overall. The Bengals improve to 12-16 overall with the two victories.
Buffalo State wasted no time in showing its powerful offense. After a one out single, Sam Strapason hit a two-out homerun to put the Bengals ahead in the first inning. In the second inning, Krista Baker hit a two-run single to left field to stretch Buffalo State's lead to 4-0.
Nazareth's offense answered in the bottom of the second inning, but the Golden Flyers were unable to push more than one run across the plate. Junior
Casey Mathers received a lead-off walk and moved to second following a single by freshman
Sarah Cipperly. Freshman
Meg DeMario advanced Mathers and Cipperly to second and third base, respectively, following her one-out single to left field. With two outs, freshman
Claire Campbell drove Mathers in from third after reaching on an error. The Bengals scooted out of the inning with a three-run lead after ending the inning with a force out.
After forcing the Bengals into a 1-2-3 top of the third inning, Mathers advanced to scoring position in the bottom half. The Golden Flyers, however, grounded into a fielder's choice to end their threat. Buffalo State added three runs in the top of the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by Kyrstin Lekki.
Mathers pitched all seven innings of game one for Nazareth, allowing seven earned runs and striking out five batters. Kaylee Lekki pitched seven innings for Buffalo State and allowed the Golden Flyers' lone run.
In the second game, the Bengals' offense pounded out 12 runs on 15 hits, and Buffalo State's Sam Tilkens allowed just three hits. After a scoreless first inning, the Bengals scored a run in the second inning and exploded for five runs in the third inning. Buffalo State added two runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth inning. Lekki hit her second homerun of the day in third inning to help lead the Bengals' attack.
Cipperly, Patenaude, and sophomore
Mandy Weakley each had one hit for the Golden Flyers against Tilkens. After her single in the second inning, Weakley moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on the single by Cipperly. Buffalo State forced the final two Nazareth batters to hit into ground outs to end the inning before Weakley was able to score. Patenaude also reached scoring position in the fifth inning after her single. Patenaude moved to second, then third base following successive ground outs. A line out ended Nazareth's bid to thwart Buffalo State's shutout.

Kelly Kocher started the game and pitched two innings and recorded three strikeouts while allowing one run on two hits. Senior
Jessica Mangicaro closed out the final three innings of the game with two strikeouts.
The Golden Flyers travel to Utica Friday afternoon for a conference doubleheader against the Pioneers. Nazareth hosts Empire 8 rival Alfred Saturday afternoon in the Golden Flyers' final home game of the season.
