ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Geneseo used the fourth inning in game one and two of its doubleheader to sweep the Nazareth in two non-conference softball games Thursday afternoon. The Blue Knights defeated the Golden Flyers 9-0 in the first game and 6-3 in the second game. Freshman
Kasey Pollot had three hits, a run, and an RBI for Nazareth in game two.
Following the losses, the Golden Flyers drop to 3-17 overall. Geneseo evens its record at 10-10 with the victories.
After surrendering a 2-0 lead to the Blue Knights in the second game, Nazareth rallied with one run in the second and third innings to tie the game. Sophomore
Mandy Weakley started the inning with a single, and after advancing to second on a sacrifice by freshman
Shauna Bardanis, scored on an RBI single by freshman
Sarah Cipperly.
The first three Golden Flyers reached base in the third inning following three consecutive singles by Pollot, and fellow-freshmen
Kailey Ritch and
Liz Toner. Junior
Casey Mathers grounded into a double play, but Pollot scored on the ground ball. The Blue Knights avoided further damage by forcing Weakly into a ground out.
Geneseo reclaimed the lead, 5-2, in the top of the fourth with three runs on four hits. The inning was highlighted by a two-out RBI-double by Rebecca Fitzgerald, who also scored later in the inning. The Golden Flyers trimmed their deficit to 5-3 in the bottom half after loading the bases with one out. Bardanis and Cipperly each singled to put the first two batters on base, then freshman
Emily Beckley reached after being hit by a pitch. Pollot singled to left field to score Bardanis, but the Blue Knights prevented Nazareth from putting any additional runners across the plate.
Senior
Jessica Mangicaro pitched the first five innings for Nazareth and was relieved by freshman
Meg DeMario. Mangicaro and DeMario finished with four strikeouts and two strikeouts, respectively. Katie Gallagher and Patricia Callahan each pitched about three innings for Geneseo and tallied five strikeouts apiece.
The first game belonged to the Blue Knights thanks to strong pitching and timely hitting. Geneseo held Nazareth to two hits in game one, by Mathers and Toner. The Blue Knights' seven-run fourth inning, in which Geneseo hit two homeruns, secured Geneseo's victory. Sophomore

Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 schedule this weekend with doubleheaders at Utica (April 16th) and Ithaca (April 17th).
