ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Nazareth men's and women's basketball teams each hosted an exhibition game Friday evening at the Kidera Gymnasium. The men defeated Western Ontario 75-64 while the women fell to Queens 57-48.
In the men's game, the Golden Flyers demonstrated their balanced scoring attack as five players finished in double figures. Tyshun Stephens had a game-high 19 points and four assists to lead the Nazareth offense. Phil Scaffidi and Scott Hayford scored 14 points and 13 points, respectively. Dan Waldbillig and Jason Corletta each tallied 11 points. Brad Ford added five points while Greg Lothridge chipped in two points.
Shooting over 57 percent (16-28) from the field, including almost 63 percent (5-8) from the beyond the three-point arc, Nazareth took the lead early in the first half and extended its advantage to double digits quickly. Nazareth finished the game shooting 46 percent (24-52) from the field. The Golden Flyers also finished with 33-28 advantage in total rebounds. Jake Fladd collected a game-high seven rebounds to lead all players. Nazareth finished the game 21-26 (81 percent) from the free throw line to maintain its lead.
In the women's contest,
Brittany Wilson finished with a team-high 14 points, followed by
Danielle Chamberlain who scored nine points and
Katie Kollar who tallied eight points. Chamberlain also finished with a game-high three steals while
Brittany TallChief recorded a game-high 12 rebounds. Wilson recorded a double-double as she grabbed 10 rebounds. TallChief (seven points), Rebecca Rumschik (five points),
Brittany Patenaude (three points) and
Michelle Melanson (two points) each chipped in for the Golden Flyers' offense.
Queens held the Golden Flyers to around 30 percent shooting from the field throughout the game. Nazareth's defense, however, kept the Golden Flyers in the game as they only allowed the Gaels to shoot 32 percent from the field. Queens finished 16-25 from the free throw line, including 13-21 in the second half to secure the victory. Nazareth converted eight of its 16 opportunities from the charity stripe over the course of the game.
The women's and men's teams are both in action again November 15th when the teams tip-off their respective regular seasons. The women host Fredonia at 6 p.m., followed by the men's contest against Hilbert at 8 p.m.
