ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- All-tournament team selection Rosa Drummond scored 22 of her game-high 27 points in the second half for visiting Smith Sunday as the Pioneers defeated Nazareth in women's basketball, 65-60, at the Kidera Gymnasium. The game was part of the second day of competition at the Onnie's Classic hosted by Nazareth.
Combined with Saturday's win over Brockport, Smith finished the round-robin event with a 2-0 record and improved to 3-0 overall. Nazareth suffered its first defeat of the season and now stands at 2-1 overall.
Senior
Brittany Patenaude combined 15 points with 11 rebounds and was named to all-tournament team for Nazareth. Smith's Lizzy BelBruno scored 11 points and also represented the Pioneers.
Freshman Paulina Solis scored all 15 of her points in the first half for Smith, which grabbed a 35-27 lead through the first 20 minutes. Nazareth, however, staged a solid second-half rally by using a 23-12 scoring run over the first 11 minutes to take a 50-47 lead. Sophomore
Becca Rumschik scored all five of her points on consecutive possessions to give Nazareth its first lead since early in the first half at 48-47 with 11:06 to go. Senior
Brittany TallChief added a pair of free throws with 9:05 to go to extend Nazareth's lead to 50-47.
Drummond took over down the stretch for Smith as she scored 14 of her points over the last nine minutes, including a jumper with 5:59 to go that enabled the Pioneers to regain the lead for good at 54-52.
Nazareth was still within three, at 61-58, following a free throw by
Brittany Wilson with :44 left, but Drummond made four more foul shots in the closing seconds to seal the win. Her 27 points featured a 12-for-13 showing at the free-throw line.
Nazareth shot 21 for 49 from the field, but was derailed by 25 turnovers. Wilson finished with 16 points and TallChief had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Smith had a 42-37 rebounding advantage with Ellie Giles grabbing a game-high 14.
Nazareth returns to action Tuesday for a non-conference game at Buffalo State at 6 p.m.
