ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth scored goals late in each half Saturday as the Golden Flyers remained unbeaten in Empire 8 Conference women's soccer action with a 2-0 win over Elmira.

The victory improved Nazareth's conference record to 4-0-1 and kept the Golden Flyers tied for first place with Stevens in the conference standings. Stevens defeated Alfred, 4-0, Saturday. Nazareth is 7-2-3 overall and is unbeaten (6-0-1) in its last seven games. In addition, Nazareth has won its last five games by shutout and hasn't allowed a goal since Sept. 24 at Stevens, a stretch of 500 minutes. Elmira is 7-7 overall and 3-2 in conference games.

Nazareth had a 17-5 advantage in shots, including a 10-2 edge in the second half, but the Soaring Eagles remained resilient in keeping the Golden Flyers off the scoreboard until the 41st minute.

In that sequence, freshman Elizabeth Howell scored her third goal of the season after receiving a pass from sophomore Anne Czelusniak on the left side of the box. Howell then drilled a high, left-footed shot into the upper right corner of the goal for a 1-0 Nazareth lead.

Nazareth had second-half chances, including a shot off the left goal post by freshman Janelle Flanagan, but the score went unchanged until the closing minute. Sophomore Olivia Derleth sent a long lead pass up the middle of the field to senior Erica Conte, who sent a low shot into the left corner for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Nazareth's defense did the rest with senior Deborah Towle, junior Amanda Sudore and sophomore Sarah Cipperly helping to make the three saves made by sophomore goalie Abbie Carey seem routine. Carey now has five shutouts.

Saturday's game was the first of five straight at home for the Golden Flyers, who host E8 rival St. John Fisher Wednesday at 4 p.m.
