GENEVA, N.Y. -- Junior Michelle Cook scored four goals and added two assists and senior Nora Davis also scored four times for visiting Nazareth Saturday as the Golden Flyers stunned 15th-ranked William Smith, 18-10, in the women's lacrosse season opener for both teams.

"It's a great team win," said Nazareth Coach Traci Lian. "We played great team defense and had a lot of balance on offense."

Eight different players scored for the Golden Flyers, who trailed early 3-2 before scoring four straight goals to take the lead for good. William Smith scored twice to close within 6-5 late in the first half, but Nazareth answered with goals from Stephanie Cash with 1:23 left and from Alyssia Roberts with :59 left in the half for an 8-5 advantage after 30 minutes.

Cook opened the second-half scoring, then the Herons closed within 9-7 on goals by Brittany Callaghan and Molly Fitzgerald. Nazareth then used a three-minute stretch to score four straight goals to break the game open.

Senior Jennifer Young scored unassisted, then Roberts assisted Cook just 36 seconds later to make the score 11-7. Just a minute later junior Kristine Olijnyk converted on a free-position shot and freshman Alyssa Johnston duplicated that feat about a minute later to push Nazareth's lead to 13-7.

William Smith scored two of the next three goals to close within 14-9, but Nazareth put the game away with three straight goals with less than two minutes elapsing from the clock to go up 17-9. Davis and Olijnyk scored unassisted and then Cook scored her fourth goal of the game off an assist from Cash. Davis added her fourth goal of the game with :53 left.

Shots were even at 27 apiece, but Nazareth converted on 6 of its 8 free-position opportunities and senior goalie Ann Sessler made 12 saves.

In addition to Cook and Davis, Nazareth got two goals and two assists from Cash and two goals each from freshmen Johnston and Megan Cregan. Roberts had one goal and one assist.

Nazareth plays again Thursday at the University of Rochester at 4 p.m.
