Fredonia hands Nazareth first loss, 10-9

Golden Flyers visit Rensselaer Sunday

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Fredonia scored the game-winning goal with :14 left in regulation Thursday to complete a second-half rally for a 10-9 women's lacrosse victory over Nazareth in a non-conference game.

The loss was the first of the season for the 20th-ranked Golden Flyers, who were playing their second game in less than 24 hours. Fredonia improved to 2-2.

Freshman Megan Cregan scored five goals for the Golden Flyers, including the tying goal off an assist from Michelle Cook with 4:49 left. Fredonia's Amy Simon, however, also scored five times, including the game-winner on a free-position shot with :14 left as she beat freshman goalie Shelby Robinson.

Cregan scored three times for Nazareth in the first half as the Golden Flyers built a seemingly safe 7-4 lead after 30 minutes of play. Fredonia rallied by scoring the first two goals of the second half, but Cregan scored again off an assist from Cook with 25:39 to go to give Nazareth an 8-6 advantage.

Three straight Fredonia goals lifted the Blue Devils to their first lead of the game, 9-8, with 10:22 left. Cregan's fifth goal of the game tied the score and set the stage for Simon's game-winner.

In addition to Cregan's five goals, Cook finished with four assists. Senior Jennifer Young had two goals, both late in the first half to give the Golden Flyers the lead. Kristine Olijnyk added one goal and one assist and Erinn Wood contributed Nazareth's other goal.

Senior Ann Sessler started in goal for Nazareth and allowed eight goals and was pulled without recording a save with 20 minutes left. Robinson had five saves in relief.

Nazareth visits Rensselaer Sunday at 12 p.m.
