Nazareth wins season finale, 56-48

ALFRED, N.Y. -- Nazareth outscored host Alfred, 56-48, in women's basketball action Sunday, enabling the Golden Flyers to close the season with a three-game winning streak.

Nazareth also inched past the .500 mark for the season, finishing 13-12 overall and 7-9 in the Empire 8, good for fifth place in the conference standings.

Senior Kelly Dunne closed her career with a game-high 14 points that included a 6-for-6 effort from the free-throw line. That enabled her to break the Nazareth single-season record for free-throw accuracy as she finished the year 74-for-82 (.902).

Senior Kylie Bartlett finished with 11 points and sophomores Brittany Tallchief and Brittany Wilson each grabbed seven rebounds.

Nazareth never trailed in the game and the Golden Flyers bolted to an 18-4 lead in the first 10 minutes with Bartlett connecting on a three-point shot for the game's largest margin.

Alfred closed to within 23-20 on a pair of free throws by Lyndsay Murphy with 1:01 left in the half, but Dunne sanks two foul shots and Ashley Gallagher connected on a short jumper in the closing seconds to give Nazareth a 27-20 lead at halftime.

Alfred twice drew within two in the second half, the final time coming on a basket by Danielle Cooper with 6:32 left. Nazareth pulled away down the stretch as Bartlett and Dunne each hit three-point baskets. Dunne also sank two more free throws in the final minute.

Nazareth shot 19 for 51 from the field (37.3 percent), including 7 for 21 from three-point range. They also benefited from a 39-35 rebounding advantage.
