ROCHESTER, NY –
Jason Corletta paced Nazareth with 18 points, but the Golden Flyers fell to the University of Rochester 79-74 Tuesday at the Palestra in non-conference men's baseketball action.
Nazareth now stands at 2-1 on the young season while Rochester improved to 2-1.
Nazareth and Rochester exchanged baskets for most of the first half. The Yellowjackets jumped out to an early two-point lead, two minutes into the game, but Nazareth answered quickly with a three-pointer by freshman Brad Ford. That would be Rochester's largest lead of the half as the Golden Flyers would control the rest of the half on the scoreboard.
The game stayed close with teams exchanging baskets for most of the half. Nazareth put together a late surge to push the lead to seven with under two minutes left in the half, capped by Dan Waldbillig scoring the final five points of the run. Rochester would chip into that lead in the final minute and halftime came with Nazareth leading 41-39.
Both teams shot very well in the first half with Nazareth shooting 46% from the field and from beyond the arch while Rochester shot 55% and 43% respectively.
Rochester came out strong to start the second half with a 13-6 run to hold a seven point lead with 14 minutes to play in the game. Nazareth answered right back with an 11-2 run of their own in the next four minutes to take the lead, 58-56 with 10 minutes left in the second half.
In a game of runs, Rochester senior Mike Labanowski went on a personal 6-0 run on his own and gave the Yellowjackets a four-point lead, 62-58, with 8:35 left in the half. Rochester would stretch the lead to seven until Tyshun Stephens knocked down a deep three with 1:18 left to narrow the deficit to four, 70-66. After two Yellowjacket free throws, Coreltta nailed another three pointer to make it a three-point game, 72-69, with :37 to go.
With :19 left, Waldbillig banked in a three from the left side to make it a two-point game, 75-73. However Rochester would sink their foul shots late and win the game 79-74.
To go with Corletta's 18, Nazareth got 16 from Waldbilling, 14 from Stephens, and 13 from Ford. Rochester was lead by 20 points each for Nate Novosel and Chris Dende.
