Nazareth loses to Middlebury, 81-71

BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Clinging to a one-point lead at halftime, Middlebury outscored Nazareth 43-34 in the second half Friday to take a 81-71 women's basketball victory over Nazareth in the first round of the Brockport Tournament.

Nazareth, 0-2, seeks its first win Saturday at 2 p.m. in the tournament's consolation game against John Jay, which lost to Brockport, 67-62, in Friday's second game.

Junior Brittany Wilson scored a career-high 24 points for the Golden Flyers to go with eight rebounds. Junior Brittany Patenaude added a career-high 12 points and senior Mary Holland scored 11 points.

Nazareth led 37-34 late in the first half following a pair of free throws by Patenaude. Baskets by Katie Logan and Lauren Sanchez in the closing minute enabled Middlebury to take a 38-37 lead at halftime.

Middlebury newer trailed in the second half and Maddie Moreau's jumper with 11:30 left pushed the lead to double digits, 55-44.  Nazareth closed within six, 77-71, following a pair of free throws by Wilson with :26 left, but Moreau sank two free throws with :17 left to preserve the Panthers' lead.

Sanchez led all scorers with 30 points. Three others reached double figures for the Panthers: Stephany Surette had 12, Katie Pett 11 and Moreau 10.
