ALFRED, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth opened its Empire 8 Conference schedule in successful fashion in women's soccer Wednesday as the Golden Flyers got goals from junior Erica Conte and sophomore Kaylee Benz in a 2-0 win over Alfred.

The victory was Nazareth's 13th straight over the Saxons, dating back to 1994. Nazareth leads the overall series 16-8-1. The Golden Flyers improved to 2-2-1 overall, including 1-0 in the Empire 8. Alfred is 1-3-1 overall and 0-2 in conference matches.

"We played well, but we kept hitting their goalie with shots," said Nazareth Coach Gail Mann. "We had shots in and around the six all night. We possessed the ball and moved the ball."

Conte's goal was an unassisted tally at 17:41 of the opening half and was her team-leading third goal of the season. Benz then delivered her first goal of the season in the 43rd minute off a rebound of a shot by sophomore Kerry Gannon, who gained credit for an assist.

Nazareth had a 43-5 advantage in shots and a 12-0 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalie Polly Muehlenkamp played all 90 minutes and had two saves to gain her second career shutout.

After four straight road games, the Golden Flyers are back at Golden Flyer Stadium Saturday for a non-conference game against Hamilton at 1 p.m. The game will be available on http://www.empire8.tv/ and can be followed through LiveStats.
