Fisher downs Nazareth, 68-55

Dunne leads Flyers with 16 points

ROCHESTER, N.Y. --  Visiting St. John Fisher Cardinals defeated Nazareth College 68-55 in Empire 8 women's basktball action Saturday afternoon.  With the win, St. John Fisher improves to 13-7, 6-5 and takes over sole possession of fourth place in the Empire 8 Conference.  Nazareth falls to 11-9, 5-6.

The Cardinals scored the first 10 points of the game before Nazareth's Rachel Pirozzolo (Elmira, NY) put the Flyers on the scoreboard with a jumpshot at 15:44.  Nazareth went on its' own 14-point run mid-way through the first half to turn an 11 point deficit into a 21-18 lead with 6:35 remaining in the half.  The teams exchanged the lead five times before finishing the half knotted 30-30.  

Nazareth's Mary Holland (Dryden, NY) opened the scoring in the second half to give the Flyers a 32-30 lead.  The teams exchanged baskets before Fisher's Kristi Jeffres put the Cardinals ahead for good 35-34 with 16:23 remaining.   The Cardinals went on a 13-1 run to take a 48-35 lead with 7:51 left in the game.  Nazareth was able to get within nine points, 46-55, after an Ashley Gallagher (East Aurora, NY) layup with 4:07 remaining.   However, St. John Fisher went on another eight point run to take a commanding 17 point lead with 2:04 left.

The Cardinal's out-rebounded Nazareth 55-33 and had four starters score in double-figures.  Colleen Maloney led all scorers wtih 17 points.  Mary Kate Comfort had 15 points and a game high 14 rebounds.  While Kristi Jeffres finished with 11 points and Kristen Taliento finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinals. 

Nazareth was led by junior Kelly Dunne (East Northport, NY) who went 10-11 from the line and finished with 16 points.  She also dished out four assists and had four steals.  Gallagher was 4-of-5 from the field to finish with nine points.  Senior Lizzie Barlow (Cazenoiva, NY) led the Flyers with six rebounds.

The Golden Flyers travel to Alfred on Tuesday, February 10 for a 6 p.m. Empire 8 match-up.  They return home on Friday, February 20 to host Ithaca at 6 p.m.
