ALFRED, N.Y. -- Host Alfred overcame an early deficit and built a 34-17 halftime lead on the way to a 65-38 women's basketball victory over Nazareth Tuesday.
The loss dropped the Golden Flyers to 5-7 in the Empire 8 Conference standings, two full games behind fourth-place St. John Fisher, a 76-66 winner over RIT. Nazareth is 11-10 overall. Alfred also is 11-10 overall and 5-7 in conference games.
Nazareth led 5-0 early on a three-pointer by
Jamie Malloy and a basket by
Brittany Wilson, but Alfred stormed back to score the next eight points and never trailed again. A basket by Nazareth's
Ashley Gallagher made the score 8-7 before Alfred scored 15 straight points to take command.
Alfred's Lisa Button hit two three-pointers in the first half, the second one coming with :40 left in the half to give the Saxons their largest lead of the half at 34-14.
Alfred's lead continued to grow in the second half and topped out at 60-26 following two free throws by Christina Jordan with 4:42 to play.
Meanwhile, Nazareth's offensive struggles were reflected in its shooting percentage as the Golden Flyers managed just five field goals in each half and shot 21.7 percent for the game (10 for 46), including 5 for 23 from three-point range. Nazareth also committed 27 turnovers.
Wilson was Nazareth's high scorer with nine points. She also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Senior
Sally Wilcox added eight points. Alfred's Melanie Jackson led all scorers with 18 points. Lyndsay Murphy added 15 points and Jordan had 11.
Nazareth tries to regroup Friday with another Empire 8 Conference road game at Utica at 6 p.m.
