ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Host Hartwick avenged an earlier women's basketball setback Sunday as the Hawks thwarted a second-half rally by Nazareth to defeat the Golden Flyers, 63-52.
Nazareth had defeated Hartwick, 63-39, at Nazareth Jan. 3, but the Hawks got revenge Sunday and improved their overall record to 9-10, including a 4-6 mark in the Empire 8 Conference. Nazareth, which also lost at Stevens Friday, is 10-8 overall and 4-5 in conference games.
Nazareth trailed 32-30 at halftime and was able to stay close by hitting six three-pointers in the first 20 minutes. The Golden Flyers appeared poised to rally for the victory as they opened the second half with a 10-5 scoring run to go up three, 40-37, following a basket by
Lizzie Barlow.
The Hawks then embarked on a scoring run of their own -- 18-9 over a 13-minute stretch -- to turn a three-point deficit into a 55-49 lead with 3:41 left.
A three-pointer by Nazareth's
Kelly Dunne brought Nazareth to within 55-52, but Dunne missed two free throws on the Golden Flyers' next possession and Nazareth didn't score again.
Hartwick's Cassie Dresser and Lauren Ploof each made baskets, then Katie Caddell and Dresser each sank two free throws to enable the Hawks to pull away in the closing minute.
Senior
Lizzie Barlow was Nazareth's high scorer with 12 points. Freshman
Brittany Wilson added 11 points to go with a team-high eight rebounds. Hartwick's Ploof led all scorers with 21 points. Dresser added 14 and Fritzi Flores scored 10. Danee Harrison led all rebounders with 11.
Nazareth shot 35.5 percent from the field for the game (22 for 62), but the Golden Flyers were just 1 for 10 from three-point range in the second half. Hartwick, meanwhile, shot 41.2 percent for the game (21 for 51) and went 18 for 24 from the foul line, where Nazareth was just 1 for 4.
Nazareth returns to action Tuesday for another Empire 8 Conference game at Elmira at 6 p.m.
