ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior
Corey McAdam had a team-high 18 points and set the Nazareth all-time assist record Tuesday as he passed Greg Dunne, and now has 677 career assists. Dunne finished his career with 671 assists in 1999. The host Golden Flyers, however, connected on only 31 percent of their second-half shots and fell 67-59 to Albright in the opening round of the Nazareth Tournament.
With the loss, Nazareth falls to 4-3 on the season. Albright improves to 9-1 overall with the victory. The Golden Flyers will play Pitt-Bradford in the consolation game Wednesday at 5 p.m. Albright will play Johns Hopkins in the championship game at 7. Hopkins defeated Pitt-Bradford, 79-56, in Tuesday's first game.
Against Albright, the Golden Flyers trailed 31-28 at halftime, but cut their deficit to 31-30 on their first possession of the second half following a layup by sophomore
Greg Lothridge. The Lions' Adam Van Zelst answered with a three-point basket to stretch Albright's lead to 34-30.
The Lions' stingy defense helped them to a game-high 13 point-lead, 47-34, following a three-point basket with 14:06 to play in regulation. Within four minutes, Nazareth closed to six points after three-point baskets from sophomore
Phil Scaffidi and freshman
Tyshun Stephens, and a free throw from McAdam.
Albright appeared to take control of the game again with a quick 6-0 scoring run to claim a 53-41 lead with 6:50 remaining in the game. A layup by Stephens with 4:52 to play, brought the Golden Flyers to within seven points, but the Lions answered once again to rebuild their lead and secure the victory.
Nazareth's second-half shooting struggles hurt its rally opportunities. The Golden Flyers were 33 percent from beyond the three-point arc and only 31 percent from the floor in the second half. For the game, Nazareth connected on 53 percent (10-19) of their free throws and had a field goal percentage of 34 percent. Albright shot 39 percent from the field (23 for 59) and 28.6 percent from three-point range (6 for 21).
In addition to McAdam's points, the Golden Flyers received 13 points from Scaffidi and 12 points from Stephens. Lothridge had a team-high nine rebounds and added seven points.
Zac Shaeffer had a game-high 28 points for Albright and Derek Hall had a game-high 11 rebounds. The Lions held a slight 44-41 rebounding advantage.
In Tuesday's opening game, Johns Hopkins trailed early before settling for a 37-28 halftime lead. Danny Gergen led all scorers with 21 points and Mike Rhoads added 14 as the Blue Jays, guided by former Nazareth coach Bill Nelson, improved to 4-2. Dan Heisey scored 16 points for Pitt-Bradford (3-6).
After finishing the Nazareth Tournament, the Golden Flyers will resume their Empire 8 schedule. Nazareth plays at Hartwick Saturday, then travels to Stevens for a game Sunday afternoon.
