ROCHESTER, NY -- Host Nazareth prevailed Tuesday against the University of Rochester in a battle of unbeaten teams, winning 69-55 to improve to 4-0. The win was Nazareth's first over the Yellowjackets since 2000, snapping a six-game losing streak.
Nazareth scored first to take an early 2-0 lead off a jumper by
Rachel Pirozzolo and never trailed in the game. The Golden Flyers shot 41% from the field in the first half and led by 14 at the half, 33-19. Rochester made just 6-of-33, shooting just 18% in the half.
The Golden Flyers had three players in double digits with
Brittany Wilson leading the way with 20 points, including 13 in the first half. She also finished with a team-high eight rebounds.
Kelly Dunne finished with 17 points, including 14 in the second half. Dunne was 3-for-5 from behind the arc and also had a game-high seven assists. Pirozzolo finished with 11 points and was 4-for-5 from the field.
The Yellowjackets were able to chip away at Nazareth's lead five minutes into the second half. At 15:32 Melissa Alwardt converted on a layup to bring Rochester within seven points, 38-31. Again with 12:45 remaining Amy Woods put the Yellowjackets within seven, 41-34 but that was the closest they would come.
Rochester's Kate Agan led her team with 18 points while Jodie Luther finished with 14. Caroline Bernal-Silva had a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Yellowjackets out-rebounded the Golden Flyers 53-38 but shot just 24% from the field, including 1-of-14 from behind the arc. Nazareth was 40% from the field and 33% from behind the arc.
Nazareth has a 10-day break before opening Empire 8 play at Elmira on Friday, December 4th. They are back home Sunday, December 6 against Utica at 12 p.m.
