ROCHESTER, NY -- Sophomore
Brittany Wilson scored 13 of her career-high 21 points in the second half Saturday to lift Nazareth to a 56-48 non-conference women's basketball victory over visiting Potsdam at the Kidera Gymnasium. The victory enabled the Golden Flyers to remain unbeaten at 3-0 overall.
Wilson led all scorers as she made 6 of 13 shots from the field, including two three-pointers and went 7 for 8 from the free-throw line. She also led the Flyers with nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
In the first-ever meeting between the two schools in women's basketball, the teams battled back in forth in the first half with several lead changes. Two of Wilson's points in the waning seconds of the first half gave the Flyers a one-point lead, 25-24, at the break.
Potsdam came out strong in the second half and built its largest lead, 34-29, on a basket by Rachel Graf with 14:21 left. Nazareth battled back and finally regained the lead for good, 39-37, on a basket by
Ashley Gallagher (9 points) with 8:51 left.
Potsdam stayed close and pulled within, 50-48, off Graf's two made free throws with 1:06 remaining in the game. Wilson hit five more free throws in the final minute as Nazareth held on to win its third straight game.
Graf finished with 13 points to lead the Bears (1-2 overall) and Aimee Kellicutt finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.
In addition to Wilson and Gallagher, senior
Kelly Dunne scored nine points for the Golden Flyers and senior
Kylie Bartlett added seven. Gallagher and sophomore
Brittany Tallchief each had five rebounds.
The Golden Flyers are home again on Tuesday, November 24th against the University of Rochester for a 6 p.m. non-conference game.
