ROCHESTER, NY -- The visiting Utica Pioneers defeated Nazareth College in Empire 8 women's basketball, 52-38. With the loss the Golden Flyers fall to 8-6, 2-3 while Utica wins its' fourth straight to improve to 10-5, 6-2.
Nazareth took an early lead at the start of the game and held its largest lead, 19-13 with 6:34 remaining in the first half. Utica then went on a 13-3 scoring run to take the 26-22 lead at the end of the first half.
Utica's Jessica Berry scored 10 of her game high 16 points in the first half and also led all players with 11 rebounds. The Golden Flyers struggled with the Pioneers full-court press turning the ball over 17 times. Mallory Davis recorded three steals for Utica and was second on her team in scoring with 12 points.
Nazareth's
Brittany Wilson (Fairport, NY) led the team in scoring with 17 points, including 3-of-5 from behind hte arc. Wilson also led the team with nine rebounds. The next highest scorer for Nazareth was sophomore
Mary Holland (Dryden, NY) who finished with six points.
The Golden Flyers shot just 29% from the field while the Pioneers fared slightly better with a field goal percentage of 33. Nazareth was also just 1-of-7 from the line while Utica hit 13-of-19.
Nazareth continues Empire 8 play tomorrow when they travel down the road to St. John Fisher for a 2 p.m. game. The Golden Flyers fell to The Cardinals in the semifinals of the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament last week 55-53. They return home on Tuesday, January 27 to host Alfred at 6 p.m.
