Nazareth knocks off Va. Wesleyan in overtime

Golden Flyers play Salisbury Sunday at 1 p.m.

BOXSCORE
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Visiting Nazareth scored a mild women's soccer upset Saturday as senior Kelly Finn scored in the 96th minute for a 2-1 victory over 17th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan.

Finn's goal, off an assist from freshman Jenny Garrison snapped a 1-1 tie and enabled the Golden Flyers to win their season opener. The game was played as part of the Orthopedic Associates of Virginia Classic. Carnegie Mellon defeated Salisbury, 2-1, in the other game.

The home team scored in the first half to take a 1-0 advantage, but Nazareth's Meagan Rivera (Penfield HS/Fairport, NY) tied the score with 5:42 left in regulation as she converted a direct kick from about 20 yards away.

"We were tentative in the first half and fortunate to be down only 1-0," said Nazareth Coach Gail Mann. "We played much better in the second half, got our equalizer and generated some good opportunities."

Virginia Wesleyan had a 10-9 advantage in shots and Nazareth goalie Hillary Simon made three saves.

The Golden Flyers compete again Sunday against Salisbury at 11 a.m.
