ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth split a pair of Empire 8 Conference games with St. John Fisher Sunday as the Golden Flyers defeated the Cardinals 8-3 in game one, but fell in game two by the score of 11-1. The Golden Flyers are now 8-12 overall and 3-3 in Empire 8 games.

Junior Christa Harris gave Nazareth an early 1-0 lead with a two-out solo home run in the first inning. After Fisher temporarily took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third inning, Nazareth stormed back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead.

After junior Christa Harris singled, she advanced to second base following a single by sophomore Lisa Nazarenko. The runners advanced to second and third respectively after freshman Courtney Stanton connected with a single. Junior Jackie DeJoseph reached first on an error, which also allowed Harris and Nazarenko to cross the plate. Before the inning was over, sophomore Laura Finan hit a single to score Stanton from second base.

The Golden Flyers secured their victory with another three-run outburst in the sixth inning. Junior Lizzie Barlow singled and eventually scored after a base hit from freshman Kate Valerio. After receiving a walk, sophomore Kelley Horbal scored on a single from Harris, and Valerio added a run after an error by the Cardinals' shortstop prolonged the inning. Nazarenko pitched the complete game for the Golden Flyers and finished with 10 strikeouts and only allowed Fisher two hits.

The second game belonged to St. John Fisher as the Cardinals tallied four runs in the first inning and five runs in the fifth inning to close the game. Nazareth's lone run came from junior Laura Persico who hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. Pitcher Amanda Shevchuk helped keep the Golden Flyers off the bases for much of the game with eight strikeouts.

In its next games, Nazareth hosts D'Youville in a non-conference doubleheader Monday.
