ADA, Ohio -- Senior
Nick Stenuf's attempt at the 800-meter national championship fell three places short Saturday as he finished four in the race in 1:52.85. Hamilton's Peter Kosgei won the race by finishing with a time of 1:51.97, the fastest Division III time of the 2008 season. Stenuf was competing at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships hosted by Ohio Northern.
Matt Kramer of Wisconsin Superior finished second in 1:52.70. Stenuf made a final kick in the last 50-meters to come within .01 seconds of Ohio Northern's Jimmy O'Brien (1:52.84) who finished in third place. The 800-meter race was fast-paced from the start. Kosgei took control during the final lap as he pulled away from the field on the front stretch.
After finishing the race Stenuf said, "I was glad to make the finals and put myself in a position to win. There were eight great runners, and it came down to the person who had the best position in the final lap. Now I am getting prepared for the outdoor season."
Stenuf's time in the finals improved on Friday's preliminary time of 1:53.63. Stenuf's fastest time this season was 1:52.00 at the ECAC Championships March 8th, which were hosted by Harvard University.
Stenuf also earned All-American honors during the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons in 2006. Stenuf finished fifth at the NCAA Championships at St. Olaf's during the indoor season and third at Benedictine University during the outdoor season.
