ROCHESTER, NY – First year head coach
Tarah Christenson earned her first win at the reigns of the Golden Flyers, as Nazareth came-from-behind to down Wells 2-1 Wednesday night under the lights on the Artificial Turf. Freshman
Jennifer Hilts added a goal and an assist to propel the Nazareth offense.
Nazareth moves to 1-2 with the win, while Wells falls to 1-3.
Nazareth held a 24-11 shot advantage of the game, however, it was the visitors who would strike first. Kate Wells poured in a shot from the point to give the Express a 1-0 advantage just over 14 minutes into the contest.
A stingy Nazareth offense kept pushing, eventually breaking through at 19 minutes. Hilts put on a strong individual effort to evade the goaltender and fired a shot into the net as she was tripped up to the ground. It was Hilts' first collegiate goal.
The score would remain 1-1 at halftime.
After several quality scoring chances in the second half, Nazareth made good on an opportunity in the 50
th minute. Hilts carried the ball from midfield, into the offensive zone, before firing a shot at net. Wells goaltender Kelsey Kokasa made the initial save, however,
Leah Good was on the back post to put in the rebound and give Nazareth the lead for good.
Wells had an opportunity to even the score on a late penalty corner, but
Kimber Nourse was up for the task. The sophomore goalie made eight saves in net to earn the win.
Hilts registered a game-high 11 shots.
Nazareth returns to action on Saturday when it will travel to Hartwick for its first conference game at 1 p.m.
